Generally speaking, we have two methods of seismic design for buildings in Japan : one for multi-storey buildings which are below 45 metres in height, and the other for high-rise buildings which are over 45 metres in height. The former is the static method which is decided in Japanese building code, and the latter is the dynamic one based upon the response analysis of buildings. When we consider the former seismic design for multi-storey buildings, it becomes doubtful that the static seismic coefficient 0.2 which is decided from the engineering judgement is fit to the fact, because seismic forces which are transmited into buildings during earthquake are different according to the natural period of buildings. Unless we apply the dynamic analysis for multi-storey buildings, we can not catch the real behavior of them during earthquake. In this study, the linear and non-linear response analysises of four types of the multi-storey reinforced concrete buildings during earthquake are executed.
