This study aims to investigate the morphological of Kyoto as well as its peculialities of the urban space. During the Middle ages of urban history, Japanese city, especially Kyoto, seems to have been freed from Chinese influence of city planning and to have been establishing native characters of Japanese urban space which flourished in 16th century. In this part (I), ancient documents about house lot are examined in order to trace the dimensions and shape, which had been transformed from ancient patterns of Heiankyo, founded in strong influence of chinese Capital. This examination will also make clear the origin of peculiar allotment of house lots in the square block, which is recognized today yet.
