The objective of this study is to find out an optimal type of vicinity infrastructure suitable for aging community especially in cold and snowy regions.
An investigation was carried out at a couple of aging new towns developed in Midorigaoka, which are situated on the fringe of the urbanising area of a regional centre city of Asahikawa in Hokkaido.
The residents of the Midorigaoka district appreciate the existing infrastructure of partly widened road in the cul-de-sac system, and it is concluded that a footpath widening to make a small pedestrian precinct for vicinity use is much preferable for the aging community in cold and snowy regions.
