Rikuu earthquake of 1896 caused a huge human damage that claimed 209 lives and injured 779 people. However, only statistic of human damage was showed in research report, damage situations and causes are not even mentioned. Considering the factor of human damage is important for future disaster prevention. In this study, characteristics of casualties are surveyed mainly on local literatures. In the result, situation and cause of human damage are revealed as that many fatalities are caused by house collapse.
