This paper discusses the problems of school’s earthquake disaster reduction activities. A questionnaire survey was carried out among municipal government education boards in Japan. Over 30% of municipal governments indicated that more than a decade was needed or it was unpredictable, to meet seismic code for public elementary/junior high school buildings. In addition, earthquake resistance measures at school facilities have issues especially in earthquake countermeasure implementation area. To improve disaster reduction activities, educating teachers about disaster education as well as better coordination between schools and region residents are also recognized as important.
