Shonai Earthquake of 1894, one of the largest inland earthquakes occurred in flat plain in Japan, attacked Yamagata and Akita Prefectures and caused 726 deaths. The authors have continued literature survey on historical earthquakes in Akita Prefecture and in this paper the Shonai earthquake was investigated. At the first step, reconnaissance reports, local publications, local newspapers and local governmental documents at that time were collected and reviewed. Damage information by local governmental unit was listed in a table.
