One of the main purposes of education is to help (young) people to be prepared for today and tomorrow. In an editorial of a special issue of IRGEE relating to Future geographies and geography education, Béneker and van der Schee (2015) argue that “communities of geography teachers should rethink what geography young people really need to learn to be better prepared for the near future” (p.287). It could then be argued that communities of geography teacher educators should rethink what trainee geography teacher educators really need to learn to be better prepared to teach them. In response, this paper explores two areas of consideration for geography teachers of the future, reflecting on both challenges and opportunities this may bring.
