The strength of an important overturning process of North Pacific sea water originating in the northern Sea of Okhotsk is determined by the sea water salinity in the area. Previous observation shows sea water salinity in the area is statistically related to precipitation over the Kamchatka Peninsula (KP), where mountain coverage is large and seasonal climate variability is high. Based on hydrological observation data we obtained, we analyze and estimate freshwater discharge from the KP using the SWAT model. Our results successfully verify the relationship between discharge from western KP and the overturning process in the northern Sea of Okhotsk.
