Zostera marina L. can generally propagate by vegetative and sexual reproduction. The recruitment of lateral shoots from rhizomes play an important role in maintaining a stable population structure of a Zostera bed. In our mesocosm-scale experimental tanks, growth of new lateral shoots were observed on the upper branch of reproductive shoots in annual Z. marina. The current study is the first report of production of new lateral shoots from reproductive shoots.
