This study sought to gain a better understanding of ESL students' beliefs about English and its study. Conducting a questionnaire with 57 ESL students in Canada, the study documented several findings: (1) a majority of the students are preoccupied with the concept of standard English, although many of them simultaneously find it acceptable for non-native speakers to speak accented-English; (2) ESL students' desire to speak standard English and their support for nonnative speakers' accented-English are operating independently; and (3) ESL students' endorsement of accented-English is related to other beliefs such as non-native speakers' ability to master standard English, their linguistic right to speak English in their own way, and accented-English as an effective input for English learning. The present study suggests implications for future research on beliefs about language.
