There is much confusion regarding the use of the word "decoration". Kant wrote, in his famous Kritik der Urteilskraft, "Decoration is parerga". Worringer explained, "Ornament is not parerga, but paradigma". We must recognize that decoration is not something merely for application in the fine arts, but that it at the same time express a social meaning. From the beginning of this century, functionalism has become the main theory in the decorative arts-mostly through Sullivain. Extreme functionalism today may have come to possess an international character, In the process, however, it has lost its most important indigenous character. We must let decoration be an expression in form of indigenous surroundings. In doing so, the word decoration will truly come to mean "an art of everyday life".
