Colorimetric determination of methyl formate in liquid dimethyl ether by iron complex formation with hydroxamic acid has been studied. The procedure is as follows: Sample is evaporated at room temperature and the gas produced is absorbed in two absorption bottles, which contain a mixture of 10 mlof 14% alcohol solution of hydroxylamine hydrochloride and 1 ml of 25% KOH solution. The absorbed solution is transfered to colorimeteric tube and they are warmed at 60°C for 5 min., then cooled at room temperature. To these, 1 ml each of ferric chloride solution are added, and then 1 ml each is added further. Five min. later, methyl formate is measured colorimetrically with the standard coloration series. This method is recommended to the determination of about 0.01% and less amount of methyl formate, the amount of which is usually difficult to be determined by the usual gas chromatography.
