Two different methods of electrostatic collection of sulfur oxides were examined.
The one is the collection of sulfur dioxide involving absorption of the gas into the electrostatically charged mist generated by d. c. high voltage. For obtaining the charged mist, a solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide containing a small amount of iso-propanol was atomized from a stainless steel capillary as an anode. The higher the applied voltage on the electrodes, the better the generation of the mist. The collection efficiency was 94% for 20l of gas containing 1800 ppm of sulfur dioxide with the mist generated from 10 to 20 ml of the solution.
The other method was the collection of sulfur trioxide aerosol by an electrostatic precipitator. Sulfur trioxide passed through an absorber containing 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, and the aerosol produced in the absorbent was then led to the precipitator. The collection efficiency of sulfur trioxide by this method was 100% for the same samples as used in the examination of the former method.
