The Kiso River upstream embankments were built from 1601 to 1609, but afterward they were broken by repeated flooding and many spur dikes were placed at specific times and locations. This research investigated the relationship between the number of spur dikes and river course characteristics and the height of spur dikes and the dike break prevention effect. As a result, it became clear that the density of spur dikes is related to the water-surface slope of flood and that the height of spur dikes is related to dike breaks.
