The Naruto Strait, which connects the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean, is a place of scenic beauty famous for whirlpools. We researched about the features of scenic viewpoints, including the way that whirlpools are actually seen from them. As a result of field surveys at selected potential 32 scenic viewpoints located around the strait, 16 points were identified as places where whirlpools were observable. Among them, 5 points were found particularly suitable for appreciating whirlpools. Fixed-point observation and photo analysis of whirlpools were conducted at these 5 points at spring tide. The results show that 2 points on a bridge are suitable for appreciating the form and dynamic changes of whirlpools themselves, while 3 traditional viewpoints are for appreciating various strait landscapes to which whirlpools add accents and expressions.
