In recent years, it is required to comprehensively design cities and ports, and to construct a port city with an identity. It is the purpose of this study is to clarify the characteristics of the port city by statistical data analysis and questionnaire survey to administrative agencies. The following was clarified by this study. 1) 49 port cities were classified into 7 groups. 2) The range of the surrounding zone of the port and harbor area assumed by the port city is classified from the viewpoint of "geographical spread" and "shape of zone". 3) It is shown that relation between characteristic of urban structure and maintenance of surrounding zone of the port and harbor area in port city by correspondence analysis.
