Abstract
Major water-soluble polysaccharide obtained from the cell wall of Cladosporium trichoides by diethylaminoethyl-cellulose column fractionation is a heteroglycan, [α]20D+50°(c=1, H2O), which is composed of D-galactose, D-glucose, D-mannose, and small amount of L-rhamnose (1.4 : 1.4 : 1.0 : 1.0). The results of periodate oxidation, Smith-type degradation, methylation, and gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry spectra show that the polysaccharide has branched structure and contains 1, 2-, and 1, 2, 6-linked galacto-furanosyl, 1, 3, 6-linked mannopyranosyl, and a small amount of 1, 4-linked glucopyranosyl residues as the main units. The terminal residues are glucopyranosyl and mannopyranosyl residues.
