Abstract

Two new tetranortriterpenoids, mahonin and secomahoganin, have been isolated from the cotyledons of seeds of Swietenia mahagoni. The structures of these compounds were determined by the use of two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2-D NMR) techniques (¹H-¹H correlation spectroscopy (COSY), ¹H-¹³C COSY, and ¹H-¹³C long-range COSY) and assignments of their ¹H-and ¹³C-NMR signals were performed. A possible biosynthetic pathway to these tetranortriterpenoids is proposed.
