Abstract

A new triterpene isolated from the seeds of Trichosanthes kirilowii (Cucurbitaceae) was proposed to be 5-dehydrokarounidiol [D : C-friedo-oleana-5, 7, 9(11)-triene-3α, 29-diol, its 3-O-benzoate, and 7-oxo-D : C-friedo-olean-8-ene-3α, 29-diol, hasd previously been isolated from the same source. The structure was confirmed by X-ray analysis of the corresponding diacetate. This is the first report of a naturally occurring triterpene possessing a Δ^{5, 7, 9(11)}-conjugated triene system.
