Abstract
A phenolic compound, oryzanol-C, isolated from rice-bran oil, was shown to be a ferulate of an alcohol, tentatively named alcohol-C. Some derivatives of alcohol-C were prepared. Alcohol-C is a new triterpene of C31-skeleton. Examination of infrared spectra and other chemical properties indicates that alcohol-C contains a vinylidene group and the same ring system as that of cycloartenol (I). Alcohol-C is not identical with cyclolaudenol (II).
