The mechanism of the color reaction between 3, 6-dinitrophthalic acid and a reducing sugar was clarified. The initial wine-red color is produced by 3-hydroxyamino-6-nitro-phthalic acid and the stable orange-red color by 3, 3'-azobis (6-nitrophthalic acid). Some reduction products of the reagent were also prepared.
