This study analyzes a survey conducted by the University of Tokyo’s Center for Research on University Management and Policy (CRUMP) in 2010 concerning university staff members. The research examines how the career orientation of university staff affects their motivation to learn about and understand universities. The analysis revealed the following three facts: (1) career directions have a positive effect on learning motivation; (2) staff hopes for their future fields of expertize̶such as educational and student affairs, admissions and public relations, general and personnel affairs, or university planning̶have positive effects on learning motivation; (3) the determining factors are different for varying age groups. These findings may be a good reference for improving activities for staff development.
