I would like to congratulate all those involved in e-Journal of Surface Science and Nanotechnology (e-JSSNT) on the twentieth anniversary of its first issue this May, 2023. Around twenty years ago, the field of surface science had reached maturity, with there being a sense of stagnation in the air. Yet, it would not be an exaggeration to say that it was also the beginning of a major transformation of the field. Up until then, surface research had mainly used methods in ultrahigh vacuum environments. It is the development of various types of scanning probe microscope, the most useful tool in surface research, that made it possible to conduct research on a nanometer scale in all environments, including air and solution. Application not only to inorganic substances, but also organic monolayers and biomolecules started to become a possibility. It was also around this time that SPring-8 came into service in Nishi-Harima. Research on surfaces and interfaces using synchrotron radiation has entered a new era. The seeds of various new researches have begun to grow.
