Field-induced stop band shift in the transmission spectrum of homeotropically aligned ferroelectric liquid crystal has been studied. Stop band wavelength shifts upon applying electric field perpendicularly to the helix axis. Accordingly, the wavelength of laser action based on the band edge effect of the stop band shifts upon the field application. Theoretical calculation suggests that the deformation of the helix induced by the field is trivial. The dynamic response of the helix elongation has been investigated and it has been found that the response time is of the order of microseconds.
