Synthesis and Thermal Properties of Novel Polymer Liquid Crystals Having a Liquid Crystalline Core at Side Chain.

Abstract

This paper describes thermal properties of some poly- ω- [3-{4- (alkoxyphenoxycarbonyl) phenoxycarbonyl}phenoxy]alkyl acrylate (compound 3). Compound 3 is very interesting in connection with the correlation between the molecular structure and liquid crystalline properties. All the members show one or two kinds of smectic phases having a focal conic texture except for the ethoxy member. The structure in the smectic phases was investigated by the X-ray diffraction.
