Positive characteristics in the transition region of current-voltage curve from Townsend to glow discharge is investigated. The theory of space charge effect on the positive characteristics is defined through the experimental results on the pd condition and the current density levels. On the other hand, the effect of metastable particles on the positive characteristics of Townsend discharge is proposed from the integrated results concerning the temporal enhancement and suppression of ionization current in N2 gas. The behavior of the metastables is quite consistent with the experimental data for the. appearing conditions on pd, D/d and the kind of gas, and with the mechanism of positive characteristics.
