Utilization of biomass in replacement of fossil-based resource for chemical production has received increasing attention. In this study, we develop a multi-criteria framework for design of bio-based chemical production process, supporting selection of the most suitable chemical and process configuration for production. Life cycle assessment is integrated in the sustainability assessment of the alternative processes. In the case study, alternative synthesis processes producing three chemicals: ethylene, acetic acid and ethyl acetate are designed. Based on the evaluation results of production cost, safety hazards and environmental impacts, the optimal product and sustainable synthesis process are selected.
