The untreated patients presented cavities and positive AFB in 60-70% at the time of admission. By adequate treatment after staying for 1 year in the sanatorium, cavities and AFB were decreased to 1-14%.
On the contrary, the patients, who had been already treated at home or at the other medical facilities, showed still cavity formations and positive AFB in 80%, despite of over one year period of treatment before admission.
Thus total treatmentsterm and amount of antibiotics of untreated group were about a half of those of treated group. Moreover, the later received surgery in higher rate (ca. 60%) than the former (ca. 7%), thet resulted low respiratory func-tion after recovery.
Therefore, from every point of view, the first 1 year of treatment for tuberculosis is the most important and seems to influence the prognosis.
