抄録

In this essay, the writer discusses the progress of voluntary activities in Japanese school, referring to the situation of the postwar educational reforms in Japan. The paper includes the issue that there have been two principles in education since then; teaching knowledge based on the idea of methodicism, and learning through practice in the society supported by a concept of experimentalism. It also deals with the social context of controversy over the hoshi (service) and volunteer. In addition, the writer presents the insight which creates new aspect of school education regarding the true meaning of voluntarism over the dilemma of setting required subjects or respecting spontaneous learning.
