This paper focuses on Morita Shiken (1861-1897) who was a renowned translator in Meiji period Japan, and explores his ideas about the act of translating literary works and about ideal translations. We can search his ideas through his discourses on translation such as essays, an interview and an epistle, and seven of them will be introduced in this paper. His claims were not steady in his short life. He had gained experience by practice, and from his experience he could learn some translation strategies and understood practical needs to translate. It seems that his practice to translate and his ideas about translation influenced each other, and they gradually changed. In the section six, we will look at two excerpts from Morita’s translation works in order to seek some relationship between his discourses and his practice.
