In Thailand, interpreting and translation education has mainly been developed at universities. Whereas in Japan, it has also been offered at private vocational schools. The translation studies program (in Thai-English combination) for the bachelor degree was first offered at Kasetsart University around 1980. The Master’s degree program (in Thai-French combination) was offered at Thammasat University from 1993. Since then, the number of translation studies programs has been increasing and in 2008 there are 8 translation studies programs at 5 different universities. At Chulalongkorn University, interpreting studies program has started only in 2007.
This paper aims to report and present the current status of education in interpreting and translation studies at graduate schools in Thailand. The critical observation on the problems is derived from on-the-spot investigation including a questionnaire survey and interviews at 8 master's course programs of 5 universities in Thailand.
