From the control engineering aspect, this paper describes mathematical formulation for the control system design of parallel hybrid electric vehicles. This research analyzes the hybrid vehicle torque distribution system from the viewpoint of driving torque response and fuel economy improvement. The optimal control strategy is developed in two steps: first the minimum principle is applied and interpreted in an innovative way when finding the optimal solution for fuel consumption. Next, the hybrid system that realizes driving energy distribution to engine and motor considering driving torque response and fuel economy improvement, is designed by using optimal control theory. The concept of this study was theoretically analyzed by a driver model expressed by car following model. Finally, the effectiveness of the system is verified by simulations and compared with conventional controller.
