Use of NHK's Digital Curriculum began in April 2001 as a new broadcast form keeping in step with the spread of digital broadcasting and broadband Internet. Short clips, web learning materials, and web bulletin boards compliment NHK's televised programs and complete the four elements comprising a total design aimed towards subjective study programs. Corresponding with today's IT consciousness and a series of educational innovations including the establishment of "comprehensive study" periods, use of these learning materials have produced remarkable increases in the number of hits recorded for NHK's numerous homepages, and epoch-making results based on practical experiences are being reported from research project schools associated with the various NHK programs. Looking back over the history of multimedia development since 1990, these learning materials are demonstrative models for media education in this era of digitalized interaction.
