Occupant behavior has a great impact on the energy consumption, especially to the residential buildings. The basic and important step to study such issue is to learn the inner operation rules of occupant-related appliance in the household. The paper propose a definition method to describe the main characteristics of each household appliance energy use over various timescales, based on the statistical analysis of data coming from a half-year monitoring and investigation of a typical residential family, in Hangzhou, China. Such method involves two aspects as space/time mode and operation mode, which focus on the on/off regulation of the appliances. It was found that the use of some appliances like air conditioner in the typical family are driven by the living schedules of the occupants, while the use of other appliances like TV are driven by the randomness. The results have certain accuracy to basically reflect the resident's energy use rules and provide effective parameter to support further energy consumption simulation of residential buildings
