This paper presents and optimizes the annual heating, cooling, lighting and equipment energy consumption associated with applying different types and properties of window systems in three different forms (aspect ratio). Through using building simulation modeling, various window properties such as U-value, and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) are evaluated with different window-to-floor ratios (WFR)and orientations in hot summer, cold winter climate zones of china: Shanghai. By means of a regression analysis, simple charts for the relationship between window properties, building form and building energy performance are presented as a function of U-value, SHGC, WFR, orientation and building form. As a design guideline in selecting energy saving windows for different office building forms, an optimized window system for hot summer, cold winter climate is plotted on detailed charts.
