This paper examines the self-reflexive processes of Japanese corporate expatriates in Guangzhou in the course and in the aftermath of the outbreak of Sino-Japanese tensions in the East China Sea in 2012. Although the tensions served as a watershed in their self-perception as Japanese, the physical crossing of international borders does not necessarily entail the emergence of transnational identity
