The protein portion of lipoprotein is called apolipoprotein. Recently, it was clarified that apolipoprotein plays many important roles on the lipoprotein metabolism. This time we determined serum apolipoprotein C-II and apolipoprotein E by single radial immunodiffusion (SRID) in 74 normal subjects, and studied the correlations between apolipoprotein C-II, E and each of 32 items such as height, body weight, blood pressure, blood chemistry and so on, which were determined at the same time. Apolipoprotein C-II was 3.20±1.46mg/dl and apolipoprotein E was 3.26±1.02mg/dl. The distributions of apolipoprotein C-II and E were both the logarithmic normal distribution.
There existed no correlations between apolipoprotein C-II, E and any of age, relative body weight and/or blood pressure. Apolipoprotein C-II correlated with serum uric acid and/or serum total protein. Apolipoprotein E correlated with serum creatinine. However, while these correlations were significant statistically (p<0.05), the correlation coefficients were not so large (r=0.2∼0.3).
Secondly, the correlations between apoplipoprotein C-II, E and serum lipids were studied. Both of apoplipoprotein C-II and E correlated with each of triglyceride, phospholipid and total choles-terol. Of these three lipids, triglyceride showed the strongest correlation. Apolipoprotein C-II also correlated with low density lipoprotein cholesterol. There existed no correlations between apolipoprotein C-II, E and high density lipoprotein cholesterol. The correlation coefficient between apolipoprotein C-II and E was 0.514 (p<0.0001).
