The extraordinary optical transmission of a metallic film pierced by a two-dimensional subwavelength aperture arrays is explained using rigorous electromagnetic analysis. Recent experimental and theoretical works have already stressed the role played by the surface plasmon excitation and the importance of the polarization effects not only in enhancing the field inside the aperture, but also in increasing the directivity of the radiated field. In this paper, optical properties of two dimensional periodic arrays of noble metal circular apertures are analyzed by using FDTD simulation.
