A non-invasive spectroscopic method has been developed to detect Plenodomus destruens, which causes foot rot disease in sweet potatoes in South Kyushu. Early detection is crucial to minimize crop loss and ensure food security. Ultraviolet fluorescence (UV) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were both investigated. The FTIR spectral data indicated differences between infected and control samples, suggesting this technique's potential for early, non-destructive disease detection.
