This study numerically evaluates the effects of the substrates used in a stacked microstrip antenna. Unlike the previously proposed dual-band circular-polarization switchable stacked microstrip antenna, the square patch, which is placed above the cross-slot patch, forms on top of the substrate for gain improvement and easy prototyping by eliminating fabrication errors. The effects on the antenna performance of the substrate and air-gap thickness are analyzed using electromagnetic field simulation.
