The Development of the CIC Shared Print Repository and the role of Indiana University

This article describes the development of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) Shared Print Repository and the particular role of Indiana University in that development. In addition, the author gives a history of the CIC, a group of twelve research level universities located in the Midwestern section of the United States. The CIC Shared Print Repository is one of many innovative collaborations undertaken by the CIC Center for Library Initiatives. Articulated in the article are the CIC Shared Print Repository goals, core principles, governance structure, and policies. The rationale for taking a centralized approach to the repository is explored. And, the reasons for selecting Indiana University as the first host site for the CIC Shared Print Repository are described. The repository is cited as a rich example of the power of collaboration and cooperation, as envisioned by Indiana University's late President Herman B. Wells, who founded the CIC in the 1950s.
