A simple method was developed for determination of herbicides in air. The herbicides investigated were simazine (CAT), propyzamide, pendimethalin, napropamide, butamifos and bensulide (SAP) . Air was sampled both through a round-shaped quartz fiber filter with diameter of 47 mm (Pullflex 2500 Qatup) and an activated carbon fiber filter (Toyobo KF Paper P-175) of the same type using an automated sequential air sampler (Tokyo Dylec 10-line Global Sampler GS-1OD) at 10 1/min for 12 h. Each the sampled filter was extracted ultrasonically with 3 ml of xylene-ethanol (4 : 1 v/v) for 10 min followed by centrifugation at 3000 rpm for 10 min. An aliquot of the supernatant was analyzed by GC equipped with flame thermionic detector or GC/MS. Columns used were a OV-1 fused silica capillary column (1 m×0.53 mm i.d., 0.5 p m thickness) for SAP and a fused silica capillary column (30 m×0.53mm i.d.) coated with 6 % cyanopropyl phenyl polisiloxane (1.0μm thickness) for the other herbicides. The collection efficiencies and recoveries of the herbicides were quantitative. The minimum detectable concentrations by GC were 10 ng/m3for CAT and butamifos, 40ng/m3for pendimethalin, propyzamide and SAP, and 80 ng/m3for napropamide; those by GC/MS were 1 ng/m3for CAT, propyzamide and napropamide, and 2 ng/m3for the other herbicides. The herbicides were stable on the filter for a week at -20°C. This method was applied to determine herbicides in air near golf courses.
