Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effectiveness of lifestyle-related disease prevention education based on genetic factors conducted by home economics teachers in high school “Basic Home Economics” classes. We prototyped a new audiovisual teaching material that focuses on the genetic factors of the onset of lifestyle-related diseases, and conducted a class for first-year students of general education as a summary of the dietary habits. Recognizing the significance of managing health from adolescence to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including adopting better eating habits, the goal was to enhance motivation for improving lifestyle habits. Classes were evaluated by analyzing questionnaire surveys of students and instructors conducted before and after class. As a result, the motivation to prevent lifestyle-related diseases that was present before the class was maintained after the class, and the understanding of knowledge about lifestyle-related diseases and the motivation to review lifestyle habits increased after the class. It can also be said that the understanding of the relationship between environmental and genetic factors and the onset of lifestyle-related diseases has deepened. As a way to improve the motivation of the class to practice lifestyle-related disease prevention, it was suggested that learning activities that incorporate the following three elements are important: “the effect of teaching materials” such as audiovisual materials that increase interest, “explanation by the teacher” using the teaching materials, and “sharing of other people's opinions” through group discussions and presentations.
