This paper describes a theory for expecting apparent friction (FB) including in friction (F) between fiber assembly (yarns and woven fabrics) and a cylindrical steel rod (0.05 cm diameter and 0.5 cm length) from their compressional characteristics value which is measured by the same rod. FB is considered to result from the internal loss energy in fiber assembly under deformation with friction.
FB is expressed as follows :
FB=k√Z/0.413 (dWL/dZ),
where Z is the compressional distance at load P and WL is the loss energy measured from one compressional-recovery test. In yarns, FB calculated agrees with the observed value for k=1. But, as a whole, the relation may not be applicable for fabrics, although the observed value is nearly equal to the calculated for k=1.5.
