The purpose of this research is to develop a consistent approach to sand drain design that depends only on the known material properties of the soil. Combining undrained and fully drained triaxial tests of Toyoura sand to provide the cyclic resistance as well as the potential volumetric strain. A unique loading system was developed to test under both stress-path and strain-path cyclic control. Numerical equations, by Ishibashi and Sherif, were modified to predict pore pressure rise during undrained tests. Drainage requirements in a given soil mass can be determined by using the proposed method. In conclusion, an integrated method is proposed in order to design suitable spacing for sand drains to prevent liquefaction.
