Twenqy six patients of malignant neoplasm of the of the nasopharynx from 1971 to 1978 were statistically analyzed and the following results were obtained:
1) The 26 cases consisted of 21 (80.7%) carcinoma and 5 (19.2%) lymphoma.
2) The overall sex ratio, male to female, was 1.8. 1.0, while carzinoma was 2.5: 1.0, and malignant lymphoma was 1.0: 1.5.
3) The age of the patients were agmost equally distributed in the 5th, 6th and 7th decades.
4) The initial symptom: Firstly nasal obstruction, secondly palpable nodes in the lateral neck, and thirdly nasal bleeding or obstructive sensation of the ear. Palpable nodes of the neck is the first symptom in carzinoma, while nasal obstruction is the one in malignant lymphoma.
5) The time between the first symptom and the hospital visit is from within one month to within 4 years with the average 13.8 months.
6) The incidence of any cranial nerve involvement was 15.6% in all the tumors. No paralysis was found in the case of malignant lymphoma.
7) The three year survival rates were 43.6%, 39.8% and 55.6% in all the tumors, in carwinoma and in maligant lymphoma respectively.
8) The three year survival rate in male and female: Carzinoma: male 34.5%, female 47.6%. Malignant lymphoma; 50% and 60%.
9) Three year survival rate in the difference of age and the time between the initial symptom and the hospital visit showed no specific correlations with each other respectively.
10) TNM classification revealed also no specific correlations with 3 year survival rate.
