Post blood transfusion liver function of patients with head and neck cancer were studied. From July, 1971 till June, 1979, ninety three patients of head and neck cancer which were treated in department of otolaryngology, Kitasato University Hospital were carried out blood transfusion. Twenty five cases out of these cases showed high serum GOT, GPT, LDH, AIP. On the other hand only 2 cases of 77 cases without blood transfusion revealed liver disfunction.
Post-transfusion hepatitis can be classified into 3 groups by the time course of serum transaminase. Group 1 shows high serum transaminase immediately after blood transfusion and becomes normal range of serum transaminase within 2 weeks. This group is supposed to have light degree of liver disturbance and might be caused by general anaesthesia. Group 2 shows high serum transaminase from 2 weeks till 6 weeks. This group was mostly administered by gammagloblin and had a tendency of mild degree of liver disturbance. Group 3 shows high serum transaminase after 6 weeks. This group contained some cases with sever liver disf unction. A few case of this group was administered by gammagloblin.
