Utilization of xylose is indispensable in the production of ethanol from herbaceous biomass, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, or brewer's yeast, is widely used for ethanol production. However, this strain does not have a xylose-utilization pathway to ethanol. We have already developed xylose-utilizing yeast by activation of the endogenous genes and have screened ethanol high producing strains. To evaluate them, fermentation of ammonia pretreated biomass hydrolysate was carried out. We found that our strains fermented almost all the xylose in the hydrolysate, and fermentation inhibition was not observed.
