To investigate mechanical oil extraction from microalgae, the cell of microalgae was disrupted by a high-pressure homogenizer, and the particle size distribution of the treated microalgae, the amount of the hydrocarbon cxtracted with n-hexane and the energy consumption were measured. As a result, the difference between raw and disrupted samples was observed and the particle size distribution decreased with an increase in the operating pressure. The extraction rate of the sample treated at 30 MPa was higher than that of non-treated sample. 0n the other hand, the extraction yield of 80 MPa was lower than that of 30 MPa. The cell residuals caused by excess rupture of the cell would decrease oil extraction yield. The energy consumption of cell disruption method is half as much as that of drying method.
