A method for measuring and displaying a cognitive map as social representation (CMSR) was developed. CMSR was defined as socially shared images among people rather than a mental map formed individually (MM). The method was designed to measure macro-level properties of human collectivities (CMSR in this context) by widely modifying original data collected at a micro-level (MM in this context). First, we asked subjects to draw sketch maps of seven prefectures and five major places in Kinki district in Japan on a blank map. Secondly, we used graphical analyses with a personal computer to extract and express spatial patterns (or figures) shared by subjects. We discussed differences between CMSRs of groups who live in different areas as well as differences between CMSR and an actual map.
